Prof Soar came to academia from public and private industry where he held the most senior executive/CIO/IT Director roles including for NZ Police, NZ Ministry of Health, NSW Health, Dept Veterans Affairs and other organisations. In a period of consulting his clients included AusAID, federal Dept Health, Qld Health, NSW Health, Fiji Ministry of Health, Solomon Islands Government, Al Ahli Hospital Qatar and others. His research has been focused on ICT including AI for health and independent living. He is a TEQSA Expert and advises education providers at all levels. In research he has more recently returned to his original field of study, Agricultural Science, and is working on ICT enabled alternative proteins and other vegan products.

Professor Soar has over 200 publications and other papers, posters, abstracts and commissioned reports to governments; he has given over 40 sponsored and invited key-note addresses at national and international events; and has attracted support from 7 ARC grants, 4 Advance Qld and over 40 other grants to support his research.
His research interests include:
- Future Food/AI-enabled vegan protein production
- Smart homes and intelligent assistive technologies
- AI-enabled care and other services.
