Dr Anna Girardi is a Lecturer in Speech Pathology and Practice Education Coordinator at the University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ). She is an early-career clinical academic with a strong foundation in translational research and a commitment to improving care and outcomes for vulnerable populations through innovation in speech pathology. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and teaches across the second and third years of the speech pathology program.
A speech pathologist with over a decade of experience, Dr Girardi continues to practise clinically across aged care, acute, and rehabilitation settings. She completed her PhD at the University of Queensland in 2016, investigating the impact of burn injuries—particularly from button battery and chemical ingestion—on paediatric swallowing and feeding outcomes. Her current research interests include the use of artificial intelligence in speech pathology assessment and dysphagia in people with severe mental illness.
Dr Girardi is a national advocate for button battery safety and has been featured across Australian and international media. She contributes to the profession through her role as the University Representative for the Speech Pathology Australia QLD Branch at UniSQ.
