Fabiane Ramos is a Lecturer in Pathways with extensive experience across higher education and adult education. She has a background in Education, Applied Linguistics, and Gender Studies, and completed her PhD at the University of Queensland on the educational experiences of refugee background students in relation to concepts of academic success in Australia. A key area of her expertise is embedding academic literacies within disciplinary teaching to support students from underrepresented groups, particularly those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, in their transitions into undergraduate and postgraduate study.
Fabiane’s research is interdisciplinary, spanning refugee education, enabling, undergraduate and doctoral education, as well as migrant, academic, and motherhood identities. It is characterised by a coherent focus on three interrelated areas: inclusion, equity, and transitions. She examines how students and academics experience participation and belonging, attending to relational, structural, and pedagogical dimensions of inclusion, and to educational and identity transitions across the higher education lifecycle. Her work approaches equity beyond access, focusing instead on meaningful learning experiences centred on academic preparedness and care. She understands transitions as complex and non-linear, encompassing both educational pathways and broader processes of becoming — such as migrant and citizen, student and academic, and mother and researcher.
Methodologically, her work draws on qualitative, narrative, and reflexive approaches informed by feminist theories, with a particular interest in creative and self reflexive forms of inquiry.
Her recent projects include nationally funded research on in-school enabling programs as alternative pathways into higher education, and a collaborative project on matrescence in academia, including the co-convening of international symposia. Fabiane has published in leading journals including The Australian Educational Researcher, Discourse, Pedagogy Culture and Society, and Feminist Review, and has secured competitive research funding and international collaborations. She is also engaged in pedagogical innovation, including current work on the ethical use of artificial intelligence in assessment design.
Fabiane’s research interests include:
