Biography

Dr Mitchell Nicholson is a Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Science at the University of Southern Queensland, based at the Ipswich campus. He is an Accredited Exercise Physiologist and PhD-qualified academic whose research sits at the intersection of esports science, exercise physiology, and physical activity measurement. His work focuses on the physiological, behavioural, and mental health dimensions of competitive esports participation, including standardising physical activity measurement, developing exercise interventions, and promoting player wellbeing. Mitchell completed his PhD at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), investigating physical activity behaviours in e'athletes and the metabolic, cognitive, and autonomic effects of exercise interventions on competitive gameplay performance. He currently collaborates on an international Movember-funded project developing mental health guidelines for esports, working alongside researchers across Australia and Europe. Prior to joining UniSQ, Mitchell held academic and clinical roles at QUT, Southern Cross University, and the University of Western Australia, and has practised as a Clinical Exercise Physiologist across musculoskeletal and metabolic populations. Outside academia, he has a background as an elite field hockey athlete and coach, having represented Queensland and trained with the Australian Institute of Sport.
