I hold a double BSc in Science and Forestry from Nepal, an MSc in Natural Resources Management from Thailand where I was awarded a gold medal for achieving a GPA of 4/4, and a PhD in Natural Resources Management from Australia. With over 27 years of research experience, I have focused on identifying and adopting management practices that enhance productivity, profitability, and sustainability in agriculture and forestry while reducing environmental footprints. I am currently working as a Professor of NRM at the University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ).
I have conducted research in 15 countries and have published numerous notable works funded by renowned organizations. These include studies on the implementation of REDD+ capacity building in the Asia-Pacific Region, capacity building for civil society organizations and local communities on REDD+ in the East Asia-Pacific Region, the valuation of environmental services of red panda habitat in Nepal, the development of advanced drafts in benefit sharing plans for the Emission Reductions Program in Nepal, timber value chain analysis in Vietnam and Laos, development of governance standards for REDD+ in Nepal, India, Bhutan, Myanmar and PNG, development of forest reference levels for REDD+ in Fiji, comparison of international household carbon emissions, and the impact of REDD+ projects in the Asia-Pacific region.
Additionally, I have completed several research projects in Australia that have been funded by various organizations such as National Water Commissions, Rural Industries Research & Development Corporation, Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency, and National Climate Change Adaptation Research Facility, among others. These projects focused on topics such as energy consumption for surface and pressurized irrigation systems, energy benchmarking for the agricultural industry, building resilient NRM communities, emissions accounting from savanna burning, riparian carbon, economics of carbon farming, and socio-economic impacts of climate change on forested regions.
Last year, I served as the forestry expert for the WMO-FAO-UNESCO Task Team on Indigenous and Local Knowledge. Currently, I am a member of the Steering Group of the World Weather Research Programme’s (WWRP) Progressing EW4All Oriented to Partnerships and Local Engagement (PEOPLE) Project. I am also working on a soil certification project, an economic feasibility analysis of a high-grade organic fertilizers project, and the review of the Northern Australia Forestry Hub project in Australia. Additionally, I am developing a business model for environmental planting in Vietnam, working on a livelihood project in the red panda area in Nepal, and conducting a household carbon emissions project and an ecosystem services project in China.
My research income has so far totalled over $8 million. I have co-authored with 451 researchers from 35 countries and published 5 books, 37 book chapters, 5 policy briefs, and over 270 journal papers, earning over 10,000 citations and achieving an h-index of 55 and an i10-index of 191. Globally ranked 5th in 'Carbon Management' and 74th in 'Forestry' by Google Scholar. I have been recognized through several national and international awards/fellowships, including the Research Excellence Award from the UniSQ in 2009, 2014, 2021, and 2022, the Senior International Scientist Award from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2013, the Climate Change Professional Fellows award from the US State Department in 2011, Queensland China Climate Change Fellowship from Queensland and Chinese Governments in 2009, and many more.
I have supervised 25 RHD students to completion and serve as an editorial member for three Q1 international journals. I have received invitations from many renowned organizations and have worked for the IPCC Soil Data Management Group, UN REDD+ Expert Group on Forest Governance Data Collection and World Bank for developing Benefit Sharing Plan in Nepal.
