Dr Dowden conducts research on issues pertaining to curriculum and pedagogy at primary, secondary and tertiary levels as well as the scholarship of learning and teaching in higher education. He also has broad sociological interests which include democratic education, student-centred curriculum integration, Christian education, inclusive education and social justice in education. He has published over 60 research outputs and his work has been cited over 900 times.
Dr Dowden's contribution to research has been recognised through a number of awards including the New Zealand Association of Research in Education's Sutton-Smith Doctoral Award for excellence (2007), a Faculty Early Career Researcher award (University of Tasmania, 2012), a Research Merit Certificate (UTas, 2012), and two UniSQ Research Excellence awards (2014 & 2015). In addition, Dr Dowden is the Academic Editor for the Australian Journal of Middle Schooling (2013-present) and a Contributing Editor for the Australian Journal of Teacher Education (2013-present).
Dr Dowden has supervised/ is currently supervising 12 doctoral students.

Dr Dowden's contribution to quality learning and teaching at the tertiary level has been recognised by a Teaching Merit award (University of Tasmania, 2009), a Teaching Commendation (UniSQ, 2016) and a Stellar Award (UniSQ, 2024). He has also been accepted as a Fellow by the Higher Education Academy (UK). Dr Dowden's current scholarship interest in the university learning and teaching context is students' emotions pertaining to written feedback on assessment.
