I am a Lecturer in Education (Special Education) with USQ based on the Toowoomba campus. I have been with USQ since 2015 and my particular area of interest is inclusive education, grounded in the principles of social justice and equity. Previously I held the position of Statewide Education Advisor-ASD with Disability Services Support Unit (DSSU), Education Queensland, and have been working in teacher professional development since 2001, and teaching since 1995. I have a varied background with a range of work experiences having grown-up and lived in Hawaii for many years as well as lived and worked in both New Zealand and Australia. My educational background includes tertiary study, teaching and advisory experience in science, biology, environmental education, Autism Spectrum Disorders, and inclusive educational practices. I received my Bachelors Degree (Biology) from the University of Hawaii (Hilo) and my teaching qualifications as well as my Master in Education(Hons) through the University of Auckland (NZ). My Master's thesis focused on teacher professional learning and individualised educational practices for underachieving students, including students with special learning needs and disabilities. My PhD research focused on developing a deeper understanding of the experiences of early career teachers teaching students with diverse learning needs in general education classrooms. Other interest areas for me include Universal Design for Learning (UDL), online learning, teacher education and professional learning, and collaborative and inclusive practices to support engagement and achievement for students with diverse learning needs in general education classrooms.
