Dr Xiaobo (Bob) Zhao (PhD, LLM, LLB, FHEA) is a Senior Lecturer in Law at the School of Law and Justice, UniSQ. He teaches and publishes across a broad range of fields, including Tort Law, Media Law, Comparative Environmental Law, Contaminated Land Law, and International Environmental Law.
He is a founding Chief Editor of the Springer "Contemporary Environmental Law and Policy" book series and the sole author of two monographs: On Contaminated Land Legislation in Japan (Law Press China, 2018) and Developing an Appropriate Contaminated Land Regime in China: Lessons Learned from the US and UK (2nd ed., Springer, 2019), which received the Shanghai Zhongzheng Publication Award. He has also co-authored and co-edited several recent law books, including Environmental Law Codification in China (Springer, 2025, with Noeleen McNamara et al.), Contemporary Australian Tort Law (2nd ed., Cambridge University Press, 2024, with Kyriakakis et al.), Environmental Public Interest Litigation in China (Springer, 2023, with Wang Xi et al.), and Foreign Environmental Law (China Social Sciences Press, 2023, with Wang Shuyi et al.). He also co-translated The Trans-Pacific Partnership: A Quest for a Twenty-First Century Trade Agreement (Cambridge University Press / Law Press China, 2016, with He Lingling).
Dr Zhao is a Senior Research Fellow at the Research Institute of Environmental Law (RIEL), Wuhan University, and a Committee Member of the Chinese Society for Environmental Science. He serves as a national peer reviewer for the Legal Education Associate Deans (LEAD) Network, a sub-committee of the Council of Australian Law Deans (CALD). He is also a Member of the IUCN World Commission on Environmental Law (WCEL), including its Soil and Sustainable Agriculture Law Network and Climate Change Specialist Group (2021–2025).
He has served as Principal Investigator (PI) and Co-Investigator on several competitive domestic and international learning & teaching, and research grants, including the 2024 UniSQ Learning and Teaching Research Grant on AI and law assessment reform (PI), the 2023 ASSA–CASS Joint Program on Au-China net-zero immission policy (PI), the 2013 Shanghai Pujiang Scholar Research Grant on soil contamination (PI), the 2023 Chinese National Social Science Fund Project on Environmental Governance, and the 2016 Chinese MOE Liberal Arts and Social Sciences Foundation Program on the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM).
